Australia Now Leads the World in AI Use. Where to now?

One week into the new financial year, some news landed that made me smile. Australia just became the biggest user of AI in the world, per person. Not America. Not Singapore. Us.

If you run or lead a business here, that headline is more than a nice bit of trivia. AI use in Australia tells you something important about your own people.

Here is what the numbers say, and the practical first move I would make with them.

What the data says about AI use in Australia

Australia ranks first among 121 countries for AI usage per person, at more than six times what our population size would predict. That finding comes from the Anthropic Economic Index, the ongoing research program from the company behind the AI tool Claude, with the Australian figures shared at Anthropic's July 2026 briefing and reported by IT Brief Australia.

Two details in the data deserve your attention more than the headline does.

Augmentation: 54.5% of Australian AI use is with AI as a collaborator rather than handing the whole job over. That is above the global average of 51.4%.

The task mix: our most common uses are not coding. They are business documents, workplace correspondence and financial guidance. And almost half of Australian AI use is personal, not work, which tells you AI has become a life tool, not just an office one.

The short version: you are running a business in the most AI-curious country on earth, and the way Australians are using it, judgement is kept firmly with your people.

What does this mean if you run a small business?

The most common uses in the data are documents, emails and financial questions.

You do not need a big platform, and you do not need a transformation program.

If you want to go beyond just content creation, choose one workflow. See below.

What does this mean if you lead a medium sized organisation?

Your people are likely to be using AI to make life easier for them whether or not you have given them an official path.

The opportunity this financial year is to bring transparency and trust to the use of AI.

The licences you already pay for, switched on properly, with clear guardrails your people can see. People want to work with AI, not be replaced by it.

We wrote about what those guardrails look like in AI Governance for Business: What Good Actually Looks Like.

Your first AI workflow of the new financial year: unpaid invoices

Why this one first? It touches cash flow, it repeats every week, and you can measure it in days-to-paid. That is exactly what a first workflow should look like.

Your first go might be copy and paste: export a report, drop it into an AI chat, ask for reminder emails. That works, but it is still you doing the legwork every week. The real win will happen when you connect your accounting software and your email directly to your AI platform.

  1. Connect your accounting software. This is the step that changes everything. Once your AI can see your invoices directly, there is no exporting, no pasting, no "hang on, is this last week's report?"

  2. Connect your email. Now AI can draft reminders as actual emails in your outbox, matched to how overdue each customer is. A gentle nudge at 7 days, a firmer note at 30.

  3. Keep the final call with you. Every reminder lands as a draft, never an auto-send. AI does the admin; you make the judgement call.

  4. Schedule it. Ask for the run every Monday morning. Overdue list checked, drafts waiting, before your first coffee.

NOTE: for Xero users, a lot of the above is built into the AI tools available within, and doesn't need connecting to other AI tools.

At Nuovo Insights we are platform agnostic, so here is what to know for whichever you use.

Platform

What to know

Claude

Connectors make this easy, linking your email and Xero directly, or Zapier for other accounting tools

Microsoft Copilot

The chat window will not do this on its own. You will need Power Automate, Microsoft's workflow tool, which links your accounting software to Outlook, with Copilot helping you build the flow and drafting the reminders

Google Gemini

Connects natively to Gmail and Sheets. Sync your invoice data to a Sheet and Gemini drafts the follow-ups in Gmail. Zapier or Make will bridge your accounting software in

The businesses getting the most from AI are not using fancier tools. They are connecting the ones they already have.
